Yesterday afternoon I had to run around taking care of some things, including getting the modem so that I could have Internet access. I took three cabs. Each one took between 10-15 minutes to come once called, and my total cab fare for everything was right around $16. The drivers here have been really good, and the last guy would have carried things all the way into my apartment I think if I'd needed him to. I didn't, but it was nice of him to offer the help.
One of the biggest adjustments that I think I'm going to have to make is that things aren't as fast-paced here. People take their time a bit more, and spend more time chatting. It's kind of frustration for me in some respects, because I'm so used to everyone doing what they need to do and nothing more.
One thing that I really do like is the extreme quiet. My windows face east, and look out on the parking lot for the building. I don't know enough about my area yet to be able to say for sure where the actual street is, but there are very few traffic noises. Currently, there is nobody in the apartment above me, so I don't know what that's going to be like, but even noises from the hallway are few and far between. There are more kids living here, and you can hear them running up and down the stairs, but other than that, it's not really all that bad.
The cats have settled in nicely. Being around familiar stuff really makes a difference for them I think. They traveled very well, and I was extremely glad for that. They're both running around here though, checking everything out, but they're not hiding. One thing that I know they're going to miss though are window sills. My last place had nice wide sills, and often times I used them to keep things. Here there really aren't anything, so I can't use them for storage, and the cats can't use them to look out the windows. I need to get curtains or something though because the windows are completely uncovered, and because I'm on the lowest level, people could easily look in.
So, that's my thoughts after a day. My Internet service is great for email and web pages, but not so good for voice chatting and downloads. I may have to look into something a bit different, but we'll see how it goes.
