Such is Life at the Office

I was going to just send a tweet, but I feel kind of like rambling, and
140 characters just won't cut it this morning.

I'm sitting here at my desk with a bottle of Mountain Dew again trying
to stay awake. But, today is a big day here, so despite the lethargy,
I'm also really excited. Either I'm a dork or a nerd, or maybe a little
bit of both. Our phone system here is extremely old. I've been here now
for almost nine months, and in that time, I think this building has lost
power and/or had power temporarily turned off for maintenance at least
four or five times. I learned very quickly that the loss of power also
means the loss of our phone system for somewhere around three days while
they have someone come in, reset everything, and make sure that all the
phones have the proper extensions and things associated with them. The
last time they were down, mine was out for the entire week, which made
for a very boring time for me. But, we're supposed to be getting a
completely new system, which they're starting to install today. Training
on the new system is supposed to start tomorrow afternoon, and the old
system is supposed to be completely offline by Thursday morning. Whether
that will actually happen is still yet to be seen, but I give them
credit for optimism. GRIN!

So, why am I excited over a stupid phone? I don't have a clue. The only
thing I can think of is that I do like new things, and things that have
lots of buttons and things are all that much more exciting to me. Also,
I'll be getting a new headset, and I'm curious to know if that'll be
much different. Right now, the headset they've got for me has JAWS in
one ear and the phone in the other. This is a really terrific setup
since, when I am on the phone, I also need to be able to use the
computer too. But, apparently, this new headset is going to be
completely USB, so I'm wondering how it's going to work. Again, it's the
tech nerd in me that's curious. But, I'm sitting here waiting and
waiting for them to bring over my new phone so that I can see what it's
like. It's supposed to be digital, and I've been told by others that
we'll start to miss our old antiquated system very quickly. My big
question though is whether it's going to have a touch screen, or other
inaccessible features. Sure, caller ID won't work for me which will be
sad, but that's actually the least of my concerns. As long as I can
access the lines, transfer calls, so on and so forth, that's fine. But,
if they decided to make the buttons the way they're doing it on other
devices these days, this could potentially be rather interesting.

They're also giving us new carpet and a new paint job here in the
office. They're working in the evenings and on weekends, but it's been
interesting. This is a large office space, and there are lots of little
rooms and offices that branch off from the main part of the office
space. So far, they've been doing those areas, the waiting lobby and
reception area, things like that. The next few days are going to be the
copy room, the supply room, and our break room. Every morning when I
come in I keep expecting my particular entrance to be blocked. There are
at least three different doors that I can use from within the building
to access this particular office, and the entry code works off all of
them, but I don't know how to access them from where I enter the
building in the morning. I'm wondering how they're going to do things
when it comes to our work areas. It will definitely be interesting. So
far I've also been lucky that I haven't had any collisions with wet
walls. GRIN!!!

Anyway, I suppose I've rambled on long enough, and it's almost time for
my morning break anyway. But, I figured I'd come in for a few minutes
and write, even if there's really not much point to what I have to say.
GRIN!!
